Serving our country

Yesterday morning I photographed Julie and Michael's wedding reception. They were married last April, and Saturday was the big celebration with all their family and friends. I originally met Julie and her mom, Dianne, last fall. Last month I got to meet Michael, and their new son, Troy, when I did their family photos (you can see their previous post, by scrolling down further). This is an amazing young couple!!! Michael is serving our country in the military. When I met him last month I had an opportunity to talk to him and he was hoping he wouldn't have to be redeployed. However, they found out recently he may be leaving his wife and infant son this summer if he gets sent back oversees. I don't know a lot of people who have been directly affected by an immediate family member being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Because of that, it's so easy for those of us who don't live with what these families do, to take things for granted. Sure we hear about the wars on the news, or we might hear a personal story about the men and women who serve; but we often times don't put a face with the soldier we hear about. I guess we get too busy and absorbed with our own lives, to REALLY think about what they give up for us-and that's unfair and, you might say pathetic-to say the least. As I was photographing Julie and Michael's big day, I couldn't help but think about the sacrifices the two of them have made, and will continue to make, because of Michael's military service. It was truly a blessing to spend the day with them and to get to know them and their families.

The reception could not have been more beautiful, or touching! Julie's favorite color is orange and I could not get over how incredible that color looked! From the flowers, to the centerpieces and the favors, every detail was exquisite!!!! One of the most incredible things I witnessed today was about half way through the reception. When the happy couple was on the dance floor, the dj asked all the guests to gather around (there were about 100 of them). The dj then took the microphone around to each person and allowed them to say a special message to the bride and groom. By all the heartfelt messages everyone gave, I could tell that each person has an amazing tie to Julie and Michael. This was the type of moment that every person deserves to have once in their life!

One of my favorite aspects of the day was the sense of humor that Julie and Mike have. As you can see from some of the photos, Julie was not afraid to be herself. I think that's part of what makes her so beautiful-her smile and laughter.

Julie and Michael, I was so honored to spend this time with you. The two of you have touched my heart and I will forever more try to put a face on all the soldiers and their spouses who make our lives better. Your family is amazing and by meeting your moms and dad yesterday I can see that they've done what every parent hopes to do-raise a beautiful child into a human being whom anyone would be proud to know. I wish you all the best for a long and happy life together!!!!

Enjoy their slideshow!
